A Healthy Collaboration
A healthy community is a happy community, and oil sands developers are ensuring the happiness – and healthiness – of their workforces through a progressive and innovative collaboration between the Oil Sands Developers Group (OSDG) and the Wood Buffalo Region.
The OSDG Health Care Committee acts as an industry voice on health care issues and delivers optimized health care to the Athabasca oil sands region by taking a load off the acute health centres as well as providing disability management that would otherwise have to be handled by the province.
The committee’s role is becoming increasingly important as oil sands production shows no signs of slowing down and as the population of the Wood Buffalo Region continues to climb.
The committee has achieved many successes since its inception including implementing a vaccination program during the H1N1 Flu Pandemic, enhancing care for addiction treatment and recovery and improving ambulance and hospital transfers.
Dr. Tom Lawley, Chief Medical Officer of Syncrude Canada Ltd. and the Chair of the OSDG Health Care Committee, says the oil sands producers understand the need for excellent healthcare services in the area.
“The collaboration between the OSDG Health Care Committee and the community is groundbreaking. By offering onsite access to health care, we take a lot of the pressure off of the provincial system and offer our employees great flexibility for taking care of their health.”
According to Dr. Lawley, the committee is currently developing a group focused on industrial hygiene, working with a program dedicated to addiction treatment and recovery, and addressing mental health and wellness in the region.
“This committee opens the doors of communication between industry and hospitals in the region so we can collaborate and share ideas on how to enhance health care services and delivery,” said Dr. Lawley. “Oil sands development in northern Alberta is advancing as new technologies are being introduced. As the industry advances so must the delivery of healthcare.”
The OSDG Health Care Committee will continue to implement new health care programs and services into the Athabasca oil sands region and work with local health care groups and facilities to ensure those who live and work in the region have access to the health care services they require.
