Gaining Ground With Tailings Management
In December 2010, Canadian Natural Resources Limited, Imperial Oil, Shell Canada, Suncor Energy, Syncrude Canada Ltd., Teck Resources and Total E&P Canada united to announce a collaborative effort to advance tailings management. This milestone demonstrates the ongoing mission of the oil sands industry to improve its tailings technologies.
“Improving tailings management continues to be a top priority for the industry,” said Don Thompson, President of the Oil Sands Developers Group. “I am confident that this unified effort will help speed up reclamation through new innovations and technologies.”
Each company has committed to share its existing tailings research and technology and to remove barriers to collaborating on future tailings research and development. The companies have agreed to the following core principles to guide the actions of the research collaboration:
- Make tailings technical information more broadly available to the industry members, academia, regulators and others interested in collaborating on tailings solutions;
- Collaborate on tailings-related research and development and technology among companies as well as with research agencies;
- Eliminate monetary and intellectual property barriers to the use of knowledge and methods related to tailings technology and research and development and;
- Work to develop an appropriate framework so that tailings information is organized and verified through peer review and kept current.
The research objectives will be finalized this calendar year. The Oil Sands Developers Group looks forward to witnessing the improved technologies which result from this collaboration.
