On the Horizon – New Oil Sands Technologies
| The story of the oil sands has been one of continuous scientific and technological development and evolution. Companies have invested billions of dollars developing, exploring and applying new technologies and processes to their oil sands operations to make the recovery of energy from the oil sands more efficient and less of an impact on the environment.
As the oil sands become increasingly important as an energy source, so too is the pace of technological development. There are a number of new technologies, using everything from algae to nano-technology, now being researched for potential application to aspects of oil sands operations. Here are some of the newest oil sands technologies being discussed in the news: U of C digs deep for oilsands answers (Feb. 5. 10 – Calgary Sun) New Technique could double recovery rate (Jan. 27.10 – Calgary Herald) Alberta firm’s patented system tried on conventional heavy oil deposit (Oct.28.09 – Edmonton Journal) PTRC Combining Solvent and Steam to Save Water (Oct.24.09 – Regina Leader-Post) Suncor Energy seeks regulator’s OK for new way to deal with oilsands waste (Oct.23.09 – Canadian Press) Air secret ingredient in new heavy-oil extraction method (Aug.29.09 – Edmonton Journal) Canadian Oil Sands May Get Cleaner (Aug.21.09 – Financial Post) Taming Alberta’sTailings Pond (Jun.11.09 – Edmonton Journal) From tailings pond to reclaimed wetland; Syncrude restoring landscape at East Mine pit (Apr.29.09 Calgary Herald) Join in the discussion about the oil sands at www.settingtherecordstraight.ca or www.canadasoilsands.ca |
